While unopened packs from the 1971 Topps football second series do come up for auction every so often (we have two in this auction), the opportunity to acquire a complete unopened wax box is a truly rare occurrence with just the thought of 24 opportunities to unearth a Terry Bradshaw or "Mean" Joe Greene rookie card being quite enticing. When the first series of 1971 Topps football set hit the stores in late summer, collectors from the gridiron got to experience the same excitement that 1971 Topps baseball card collectors had with a fresh new product that featured an innovative, attractive design. But they also got to experience the frustration of condition-sensitive colored borders, with red, blue, or a combination of both replacing the jet black borders of the baseball series. And while the first series featured some pretty heavy hitters, namely Johnny Unitas, Dick Butkus, and Ray Nitschke, ultimately it was the 2nd series that really carried the weight of the set, with Joe Namath, Bart Starr, and O. J. Simpson joining the above rookie superstars. The box offered is in extremely good condition showing nothing more than minimal signs of age with the signature green, yellow and red coloring of the artwork retaining all of its fantastically bold color. Authenticated and wrapped by Baseball Card Exchange (BBCE).
