And you thought 1971 Topps cards were tough to find in high-grade? Take that same concept, with the jet-black borders that reveal even the slightest flaw, but make the cards oversized and nearly impossible to find and you've got one of the most elusive and condition-sensitive assemblages ever produced. The 1971 Topps Greatest Moments series is just 55 cards but represents perhaps the greatest achievement of the decade for any hobbyist determined to collect them all. Because the set is devoted to specific moments of achievement, virtually every card in the series features a Hall of Famer or superstar. But the set isn't without its share of drama, with some cards that pop up at shows exhibiting wax stains though no documented examples of unopened packs have been discovered. Almost 5,000 PSA submissions have come from this series and there has yet to be a GEM MINT example with just 60 reaching as high as PSA 9, three of which appear in the offered collection ranked #3 on the PSA Set Registry with a 7.972 set rating. The three MINT copies; #20 McClain, 31 Wynn, and 42 Harper, are each a one of 2 with, of course, none graded higher. Ten other cards in the set are the highest on record as well, including Hall of Famers #14 Perez, 24 Gibson, and 37 B. Williams, all graded PSA 8. In all, there are the three MINT cards, 37 graded PSA 8 (highlighted by #8 Killebrew, 9 B. Robinson, 13 Bench, 29 Wills, and 47 R. Jackson), with 15 graded PSA 7, including the extremely elusive card #1 Munson (unqualified - one of 8 with only one higher), 16 Fregosi, 27 Brock, 48 F. Howard and 53 Pepitone. For a complete breakdown of cards, grade, and population, please visit our website for a link to the PSA Set Registry. This set is being offered in its entirety as well as individual lots. At the end of the auction, the set will be sold to the highest aggregate bidding, whether that is the sum of the individual lots or the highest bid for the complete set. Our website will continuously update whichever method of sale has a higher bidding total throughout the auction process. Placing a bid on this lot constitutes bidding on the complete set.
