Mickey Mantle is the alpha dog of the 1966 Topps set, but "The Mick" is pretty much the grand prize of virtually every Topps set he's appeared in since the legendary 1952 Topps collection hit the store shelves. Mantle was coming off a down year where he hit just 19 homers and his batting average dipped to a lackluster .255, and at age 33, many critics felt it was the beginning of the end for "The Commerce Comet." But Mantle was on pace for a great season when injuries sidelined him in 1966, popping 23 dingers in just 333 at-bats while raising his average back up to .288. The featured card is a MINT specimen that is truly amazing, and since PSA has placed just one specimen in a GEM MINT holder to this point, it can stake a claim as the second finest specimen known. Solid MINT to GEM MINT edges and endpoints provide the foundation while the precision centering is maybe a degree or two toward the right side. The borders are factory-fresh white, accentuating the surprisingly sharp image of The Mick. You can buy an ungraded card or try fishing in unopened material to land that mythical GEM MINT specimen or snap up this beauty, quite possibly the very best there is at the MINT plateau!
