There are several baseball sets that Topps produced in the 1960s with specific characteristics that collectors find appealing, but most vintage hobbyists agree that the 1966 Topps series is the complete package. After all, the 598-card series contains Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, and Pete Rose among the parade of baseball greats, important rookie cards of Hall of Famers Jim Palmer, Don Sutton, and Fergie Jenkins, a very difficult card #1 of Willie Mays, and a long list of high-numbered short prints, several of which are Hall of Famers. If that wasn't enticing enough for the advanced set-builder, it also happens to be one of the most condition-sensitive sets ever produced by Topps. Poor centering and central image turns are the most common problems, especially among the high-number series. With so many obstacles to achieving upper-level grades, coupled with the scarcity of the short prints, it's amazing that a collection like the one featured here is even possible. Presented is a miraculous 1966 Topps set that ranks as the #4 Current Finest collection on the PSA Set Registry with a 9.379 set rating. The collection includes 47 cards graded PSA 10 GEM MINT and every other card graded PSA 9 but for the following: #75 Schoendienst PSA 8.5, and #137 and 226 graded PSA 8. That leaves every superstar card in the collection; Mantle, Mays, Clemente, Koufax, Palmer RC, Rose, Maris, Aaron, and even the very difficult Grant Jackson short-print, at the elevated grade of PSA 9 MINT. This collection is being offered two different ways; here as a complete set and as individual lots of singles or groups, and will be sold to whichever total (the set versus the sum of the individual lots) is higher. This gives prospective bidders the opportunity to examine individual cards in the collection through the use of our high-quality scans.
