In 1950, color television was in its infancy with only CBS airing some experimental color broadcasts in public buildings in Washington DC and New York City. Home photography was still largely black and white as well with the instant color photograph called "the Polaroid" still over a decade away. In short, about the only real "color" to which baseball fans were privileged came in the form of a trip to the stadium. But when Bowman's revamped baseball cards hit the streets in 1950, evolving from the 1948 black and white issue to the 1949 "colorized" backgrounds, bubble-blowing fans rejoiced at the sight of full-color art renditions of their heroes which would become the standard going forward in the baseball card industry. Replacing the mono-colored backgrounds on many of the cards were images of stadiums and ballparks, most of which no longer exist today. The issue is littered with HOFers and rookie cards, presented on uncaptioned card fronts characteristic of most Bowman products. The featured 252-card 1950 Bowman set is composed of color art reproductions of real photographs with each card still measuring the Bowman standard 2-1/16" by 2-1/2". Offered here is one of the finest 1950 Bowman sets ever assembled, each card graded by PSA and ranking as the #5 Current Finest set on the PSA Set Registry with a score of 8.081. Every card in the collection is at least graded PSA 8 (#180 Walker is PSA 8 OC) with 15 cards graded PSA 9 MINT (#37 Appling, 41, 86, 89 109, 114, 126, 133, 144, 149, 165, 172, 194, 200, and 239), nine of which are the highest ever graded. Eleven more cards are graded PSA 8.5 (#11 Rizzuto, 53, 87, 100, 101, 153, 157, 179, 202, 227, and 248) with the rest graded PSA 8. This is a truly world-class compilation of a landmark issue!
