It isn't only sports themed trading cards that are exploding in price these days! Unopened wax boxes of 1985 Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 1 are rapidly taking their place with the 1986 Fleer basketball box as the most coveted pieces of unopened modern material in the hobby. A satirical, tongue-in-cheek nod to the popularity of Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, Topps created a series dedicated to a mildly macabre version of the pudgy-faced critters that has become wildly popular among non-sports card collectors. The Garbage Pail Kids, or "GPK", series is largest single-theme card set since the invention of bubble gum. While most of the cards from the 15 (yes, 15) different series are fairly easy to find, it's the scarce 1st series from 1985 that carries a hefty premium.
