Showing he was handy with the bat as well as being one of the greatest hurlers in baseball history (he had a lifetime .215 average with 7 homers and 167 RBI), "The Christian Gentleman" Christy Mathewson poses with his lumber on this type I original 3 1/8" x 3 3/4" circa 1908 photo. The 1908 season was arguably Mathewson's best, leading the league in wins (37), ERA (1.43), complete games (34), shutouts (11), innings pitched (390 2/3), and strikeouts (259). The photo has a crease in the lower right with some lighter blemishes on the surface but the sharpness of the image quality is way ahead of its time. The George Grantham photography stamp, Sept. 12, 1908 date stamp and miscellaneous notes appear on the reverse. PSA/DNA authenticated.
