Since packs from the high-number series of the inaugural 1952 set didn't sell nearly as well as the company had initially hoped, Topps decided to move some of the key stars from the late season release into the first series of the 1953 collection, placing Hall of Famer and baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson in as card #1. For the second time, Topps led off with a Brooklyn Dodger, but unlike Andy Pafko in the 1952 set, Jackie Robinson was the most well-known player in the game, more so than even Mickey Mantle. And while the '53 Jackie Robinson may not be as brutally difficult to find at the NM/MT level as the Pafko, the black edges make it a challenging find nonetheless. With corners and centering that meet the standards for the PSA 8 grade, along with a vibrant, robust artist's depiction of the superstar, this incredible specimen is exactly what the advanced collector needs to start off their PSA Set Registry world-ranked set. A top-notch example!
