Though there might be one or two others out there that collectors can make a case for, we're pretty confident in stating that the 1965 Topps Joe Namath rookie card is the most popular and recognizable pasteboard from the gridiron. A personality as charismatic and electrifying as that of "Broadway Joe" deserves nothing less when it comes to collectible cardboard representation. A cult of personality that transcended his game off the field, much the same way as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, or Muhammad Ali, the bold, brash, and confident Namath burst upon the scene with such audacity that his now-famous guarantee of a Super Bowl III victory seems like just another typical day in the life of Namath. Once again, Topps was ahead of the curve when they decided to make their 1965 football release larger than any cardboard keepsakes previously seen to match the larger-than-life celebrity that would anchor its latest collection. The offered specimen has been graded NM 7 by the strict graders at SGC and were it not for a slight centering preference for the top, it might have made a push for an extra half-grade. With a clean, pack-fresh general appearance, this example offers extraordinary visual appeal. A boldly-struck and solidly-centered reverse complement the obverse, leaving little doubt that this example is entirely worthy of inclusion in any top-notch football card collection.
