The 1959 Topps set isn't heavy on legendary rookie cards but quality trumps quantity as the debut of Bob Gibson certainly goes a long way. Then again, Topps probably knew that Bob Gibson would be a special ballplayer as he was one of few in the 1959 offerings to be housed in the distinctive pink color choice. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, "Gibby" overcame childhood illness to excel in youth sports, particularly basketball and baseball. The featured example is within a degree or two of being perfectly centered and the sharp image of the smiling Gibson would soon be replaced on the diamond by a stoic figure that intimidated even the toughest of opponents. Very minor wear is visible under magnification, just as expected for the grade, and the slightly toned reverse is without any difficulties. A fine example of a significant 1950s rookie card.
