Walter Johnson once said, "Can I throw harder than Joe Wood? Listen, my friends, there's no man alive can throw harder than Smoky Joe Wood!" An 18-year-old rookie in 1908, Wood achieved fame in 1911 with 23 wins and a 2.02 ERA, then rolled off 16 consecutive wins the following season, a record he shared with Walter Johnson. Graded SGC 96 MINT 9, offered here is one of the finest surviving examples of Wood's 1915 Cracker Jack issue that boasts near-perfect centering with a strong MINT+ to GEM MINT perimeter around a bold and precisely registered MINT obverse. A relatively affordable centerpiece for any educated fan of the game, and arguably the single finest example in existence!
