One of the first true point guards to become a megastar in the NBA, Los Angeles Lakers ballhandler Jerry West defined the role of a floor general that would serve as a prototype for decades to come. And it wasn't just his play on the court used as a blueprint for success but his actual image, with the league utilizing his silhouette to craft the NBA logo that is still in use today. West, A.K.A Mr. Clutch, A.K.A. Zeke From Cabin Creek, A.K.A. The Logo, A.K.A. Cabin Creek Comet, A.K.A. Tweety, was a 14-time all-star and the pilot of the 1972 Lakers championship team. His rookie card is often overshadowed by the debut pasteboard of Wilt Chamberlain in the condition-sensitive 1961 Fleer series, but savvy collectors have made great financial gains in snapping up high-grade examples like the specimen featured here. The almost perfect centering already puts it way ahead of most in its grading tier, but the upper-end NM/MT corners and radiant yellow and orange background color, virtually free from troubling stray print, is a real attention-getter. A card quickly joining the ranks of the most important issues ever dedicated to the sport.
