On August 2, 1979, New York Yankees catcher and team captain Thurman Munson was killed in a plane crash at the Canton-Akron airport, practicing touch-and-go landings in his new jet when the fatal accident occurred. As the news of Munson’s death flashed across every TV and radio station in America, cutting away from regular programming to bring the tragic special report, baseball fans were stunned with disbelief, hoping it was a mistake. As more reporting came forth, the harsh reality set in. Flags were flown at half-staff in New York and New Jersey at the behest of the state governors. Many of his opponents attended memorial services in his honor, revering him as a tough, hard-nosed competitor who gave his all to win. The featured Wilson baseball offers a stunning autograph that rates as a solid 8 in the opinion of PSA/DNA evaluators and we whole-heartedly agree. Nicely positioned on the sweet spot, the signature of Munson is sure to conjure fond memories of all who had the privilege of watching him play. A spectacular single-signed ball of the fallen Yankees superstar. LOA from PSA/DNA with an autograph grade of NM/MT 8.
