As a child of the 1970s growing up on Long Island, I had to endure a yearly disappointment known as the New York Mets. My first recollections of baseball were the Mets reaching the World Series in 1973, only to fall to the Oakland A's in 7 games and toil as an also-ran for over a decade after. It wasn't until I was much older did I come to find that the series MVP, Reggie Jackson, could have, and should have, been a Met. But no, the Mets used the #1 pick in the draft to select catcher Steve Chilcutt (who never saw a pitch in the major leagues), leaving the then Kansas City Royals to select Jackson at #2. Nice job, guys! Here's a reminder that tainted my childhood in the form of a stunning 1969 Topps Reggie Jackson rookie card, graded PSA 8.5. Only overly discerning baseball card critics could lay this card side by side with a PSA 9 example and find any appreciable difference between the two. While the centering does slightly favor the bottom edge, the amazing sharpness of the corners along with the brightness of the central image and the deep pink-salmon color of the reverse, certainly figure into the advanced grade. If NM/MT just doesn't get it done for you, well here you go!
