Few players in NFL history have commanded the respect and admiration of opponents, teammates, and fans alike than has Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach. Already set at QB with 26 year old Don Meredith, the Dallas Cowboys used a low round pick in the 1964 NFL draft to secure Staubach though he still had a 5-year commitment to the Navy. A transfer from New Mexico Military Institute, Staubach saw his first action in 1962 as a sophomore against Minnesota, sacked twice while going 0-2 passing. A week later against Cornell, Staubach came in to relieve struggling starter Ron Klemick and led Navy to six touchdowns and a 41-0 victory. But it was during the annual Army-Navy game with President John F. Kennedy, a formal Naval officer, in attendance that Staubach made his name, leading the Midshipmen to a stunning 34-14 upset. One season later, the Midshipmen finished the season #2 in the nation with Staubach earning the Heisman Trophy, the last player from Navy to receive the honor. Upon graduation, Staubach volunteered to serve a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam as a Supply Corps officer in 1967 before returning to the states. Finally, in 1969, Roger Staubach was officially an NFL quarterback. A backup to Craig Morton his first two seasons, Staubach's "arrival" occurred in San Francisco during the 1972 Divisional Playoff game, coming in to relieve Morton and throwing two touchdown passes in the final 90 seconds to secure victory. Three short years later, Staubach threw the famous "Hail Mary" pass to win a Divisional Playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings. His ability to pull off last-minute victories, especially in playoff games, earned him the moniker "Captain Comeback" with legendary coach Tom Landry calling Staubach "possibly the best combination of a passer, an athlete and a leader to ever play in the NFL." The presented jersey hails from Staubach's first season in Annapolis, a lightweight durene jersey with full length sleeves. Staubach often wore the long-sleeved blue home jersey while predominantly wearing the short-sleeved version of his gold jersey. Inside the tail are three labels affixed with straight stitching: a size 46 patch, an era-appropriate King O'Shea label, and an Eddie Leonard Sporting Goods, Annapolis Maryland label. The numbers are attached utilizing gold tackle twill stitching on a gold backing and Staubach's thick black marker signature appears on the reverse. Game use is evident from staining on the front and wear on the numbers, with all labels appearing intact, original, and unaltered. The jersey was originally sourced from the family of the Naval Academy's equipment manager. A truly historic gamer! LOA Lou Lampson, LOA from Mile High Card Company.
