1915 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson PSA 8, Babe Ruth Rookie Card Pace Latest Mile High Card Company Auction
Castle Rock, Co - Continuing the trend of achieving astonishing and record-breaking prices, Mile High Card Company’s August 2022 catalog auction marked a huge success for participants across the board. “Following the sale of the Charlie Sheen T206 Honus Wagner card in March was not an easy task, but our trusted consignors stepped up with some pretty incredible items for this event,” said MHCC founder and principal Brian Drent. Leading the event was a beautiful 1916 M101-4 Babe Ruth rookie card, which eclipsed the previous sale and brought $440,217 inclusive of the buyer’s premium. A stunning example of Shoeless Joe Jackson from the fabled 1915 Cracker Jack issue graded NM-MT 8 by PSA closed at $212,632 while a completely graded T206 set minus the “Big Four” netted $351,571.00.
One lucky memorabilia collector landed a superior 1955 Ted Williams Boston Red Sox game-used road jersey with airtight provenance and authenticity for the sum of $196,415 as the shirt made its way back into the hobby for the first time in several years. An Exceptional Babe Ruth Autographed Home Run Ticket 8/11/26 HR #346 PSA 2 GOOD AUTO 8 fetched $19,326 and an autographed Ty Cobb photo graded PSA/DNA 10 GEM MINT finished at $16,109. An intriguing and scarce 1908 Reach Catcher’s Mitt Tin Litho Advertising Sign also found a new home at $37,690.
A PSA 7 NM example of Ty Cobb from the E95 Philadelphia Caramel issue shattered the previous record, traveling into the six-figure territory and closing at a whopping $107,979 while a couple of enticing T206 El Principe de Gales cards also performed strongly, as a PSA 6 EX-MT Walter Johnson finished at $35,846 and a PSA 5 EX Ty Cobb found a new home at $33,061. A 1933 Goudey # 53 Babe Ruth in NM-MT+ condition fetched $72,141, a 1922 American Caramel Co. E121 Babe Ruth Holding Ball SGC 3 VG retrieved $24,029 and the #1 card in the 1934-36 Diamond Stars series, Lefty Grove, saw a final price of $15,622 for a PSA 7 NM example. A very nice run of 1914 and 1915 Cracker Jack cards was offered in addition to the aforementioned 1915 Jackson PSA 8, including a 1914 Joe Jackson graded SGC 4 VG-EX that sold for $120,304 and a PSA 3 VG copy of the cherished 1915 Joe Jackson that settled at $59,482. A 1915 Honus Wagner in a PSA 8 NM-MT holder went for $50,403 and a 1915 Christy Mathewson graded NM-MT 8 by SGC that closed at $50,012. A 1915 Charles Comiskey in PSA 8 NM-MT grade set a new record at $8,213, a Nap Lajoie in the same grade destroyed the previous record and settled at $28,254 and a PSA 8 John McGraw brought a final price of $8,502. Executive legend Branch Rickey from the 1915 series brought an astonishing $20,692 in PSA 8 NM-MT condition, Charles Wagner set a new mark for the PSA 8 level, finishing at $11,544. and other key single cards included a 1916 M101-4 Joe Jackson with a scarce Gimbels advertising reverse graded PSA 4.5 VG-EX+ that sold for $53,950, a 1949 Bowman Satchel Paige rookie in PSA 8 NM-MT condition that finished at $29,987, a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle graded SGC 6 EX-NM that set a new record at $47,659 and a stunning 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie in an SGC 8.5 NM-MT+ holder that destroyed the previous record and finished at $191,006. Another
example of The Mick from the 1953 Topps issue in a PSA 7 NM grade finished the night at $36,510 while an SGC 7.5 NM+ Willie Mays closed at $20,803. PSA 9 MINT examples of the great Roberto Clemente from the 1957 and 1959 Topps issues closed at $20,984 and $17,236 respectively and a 1963 Topps Willie Mays PSA 9 set a record at $13,692, a Pete Rose rookie graded PSA 8 NM-MT went for $18,098 and a Bob Clemente PSA 9 from that same year demolished the old record and closed at $27,153. A 1964 Topps Clemente PSA 9 also established a new record at $8480.
Getting back to tobacco cards we find a T206 Christy Mathewson White Cap in SGC 6 EX-NM condition going for $6787, a T205 Gold Border Ty Cobb in an SGC 5 holder selling for $11,689 and a T205 Mathewson also in SGC 5 EX condition bringing $5617. Other strong T205 numbers include an SGC 5.5 example of Walter Johnson bringing $8886 and a SGC 7.5 NM+ copy of Chief Bender settling for $7165. A 1912 T227 Series of Champions Miner’s Tobacco Ty Cobb in PSA 2 condition brought an astounding $13,229 while a Bat Off Shoulder variation of the Georgia Peach from the T213 Coupon series in an SGC 4 VG-EX slab netted a final number of $11,829.
Completely graded sets aside from the already mentioned T206 set included a 1965 Topps Complete Set #2 Current Finest on PSA Set Registry with a 9.27 GPA that sold cumulatively as singles for a princely sum of $349,159, including a PSA 9 Mantle that brought $36,451, a PSA 10 Billy Williams that set a new record at $32,252 and a PSA 10 Ernie Banks that closed at $23,133. A 1955 Topps Complete High Grade Set Completely PSA Graded #28 Current Finest on PSA Set Registry With A 7.47 GPA brought in $74,815, a 1963 Topps Near-Complete Set (561/576) Completely PSA Graded All PSA 8 Or Higher - Exceptionally High Grade sold for $56,526 and a 1915 Cracker Jack Near Complete Set (159/176) With SGC Graded netted $32,498.
Some basketball items of note: recently deceased Hall of Famer Bill Russell’s rookie card in an SGC 7.5 NM+ holder brought $52,531 while a BVG 7.5 netted $19,962 and a rookie of fellow HOFer Jerry West brought $15,518. An autographed 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain card sold for $22,001 while on the more modern side, a 1986 Fleer Johnny Moore finished at $24,878 and a 2021-22 Panini Contenders Photo Variation Autographs Premium Gold Shimmer #101 Cade Cunningham 1/1 PSA 9 MINT 10 AUTO went for $15,139. On the football front, a remarkable 1950 Bowman Otto Graham in PSA 9 condition brought an astonishing $139,473, obliterating the prior record price of $20,713.
