“All-Star Cafe” T206 Honus Wagner breaks $3.1 Million, Rare T206 Doyle Variation Nets $1.05M Mile High Card Company March Auction
CASTLE ROCK, CO - The famous “All-Star Cafe” Honus Wagner PSA 1, stolen from actor Charlie Sheen and recovered by the FBI in 1998, brought in a world-record $3,136,500 to lead Mile High Card Company’s March auction. “Bidding on the Wagner was strong from the start and each of “The Big Four” shattered the previous record price” said MHCC President and CEO Brian Drent. The incredibly rare T206 Joe Doyle N.Y. Nat'l Hands Up PSA 2 GOOD, the first such card offered for public sale in over a decade, also surpassed the million dollar mark for the first time at $1,055,798, with a T206 Sweet Caporal 350/30 Eddie Plank PSA AUTHENTIC selling for $129,170 and T206 Piedmont 150/25 Sherry Magee Error "Magie" SGC AUTHENTIC earning $15,632. And those weren’t the only cards offered from the legendary white border series as another complete T206 set (without the big four) that ranks #12 on the PSA Set Registry was sold in its entirety for a whopping sum of $400,772.
Every Mile High Card Company auction seems to re-write the record books for prices realized and this mammoth auction added many new ones as well, including a 1909 T206 Piedmont Ty Cobb Green Portrait SGC 2 GOOD that surpassed the previous record of $7,700 with a winning bid of $13,371, 1911 T205 Gold Border Tris Speaker SGC 5.5 EX+ that moved the record price from $1,057 to $7,165, T205 Hoblitzell “No Stats” SGC 5 that sold for $35,009, which destroyed the previous sale price of $10,280, 1915 Cracker Jack #30 Ty Cobb PSA 4 VG-EX that moved the bar from the previous record of $22,875 to a new high at $33,341, 1915 Cracker Jack #103 Joe Jackson PSA 3 VG that changes the record books from just over $45,000 to a new high of $75,791, 1916 Sporting News Babe Ruth RC PSA 4 that took in $361,873, beating the previous mark of $215,100, 1933 Goudey #106 Napoleon Lajoie SGC 5 EX eclipsing the previous record of $44,280 with a sale of $64,406, 1964 Topps #125 Pete Rose PSA 9 MINT, the previous record price of $35,000 has now vaulted to $63,872, 1966 Topps #300 Bob Clemente PSA 9 MINT that sold for $18,849, destroying the previous record mark of $8,365, 1952 Bowman Large #2 Otto Graham PSA 9 MINT that breezed past the previous mark of $9,999 to close at $73,143, and 1965 Topps #122 Joe Namath SGC 8 NM-MT hammering at $39,535, surpassing the old mark of $19,730. And it wasn’t just the star cards setting new marks as a 1954 Red Heart Dog Food Jim Hegan PSA 9 MINT that previously had a record high of $899 just sold for an incredible $7,745, 1954 Topps #93 Sid Hudson PSA 9 MINT that hammered at $6,399, beating the previous high of $810. 1954 Topps #222 Bill Wilson PSA 10 GEM MINT selling an almost unbeatable price mark at $18,787, 1958 Topps #217 Jack Harshman PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ that brought in an amazing $6,611; the previous high sale of $167.50, and 1969 Topps #649 Al Jackson PSA 9 MINT that has moved the record price from $562.50 to $4,074.
Other featured complete and near-complete sets that sold in the March Auction were a 1911 T205 Gold Border Near-Complete Master Set that sold for $46,639, 1887 N28 Allen & Ginter (Baseball) Complete Set #13 on PSA Set Registry that closed at $18,122, 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folder Near Complete Set (129/132) Completely Graded bringing in $59,527, 1915 Cracker Jack Near-Complete Set (174/176) Completely PSA Graded #8 on PSA Set Registry that fetched $135,795, 1916 M101-4 Sporting News Near-Complete Set (198/200) with SGC Graded that went for $31,095, 1933 and 1934 Goudey baseball sets that took in $92,352 and $27,198 respectively, 1935 Goudey "Master" Complete Set of 114 Cards Encompassing Each Reverse Puzzle Variation ending at $22,563, 1948 Leaf Baseball Near-Complete Set (97/98) All PSA/SGC Graded that brought home $51,731, 1958 Topps Baseball Master Set #4 Current Finest on PSA Set Registry that was broken up and sold for a sum of $232,489, 1955 Topps All American Football Master Set #9 On PSA Set Registry 7.929 GPA that fetched $24,877, 1924 V145-2 Complete Set Completely PSA Graded #2 on PSA Set Registry selling for $26,122, and 1951 Topps Ringside Complete Set All PSA Graded #9 on PSA Set Registry that brought home $15,896.
