Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Without question one of the rarest of all Ty Cobb cards ever issued (one of the other extremely rare Ty Cobb cards is a 1911 M131 Baltimore News Newsboy also offered in this auction) This is the second highest-graded example of the only three 1928 "Star Candy" Ty Cobbs ever graded by PSA. Extremely rare candy card of Ty Cobb from one of the few issues dating from the late 1920s. This is a particularly exciting Cobb card, not just because it is one of the key cards to the rare 1928 Star Candy set, which it is, but because this is his very last card as a player, featuring Cobb with the Philadelphia Athletics in the final season of his career. Cobb was only with the A's in 1927 and 1928. Very little is known about the production of the unusual "Star Player" candy issue. The manufacturer is not identified, but advanced collectors have always referred to it as the Star Player Candy set. The attribution of this set as "Star Candy" or "Star Player Candy" dates back at least fifty years. The featured collectible offers an image of Cobb in a batting stance of sorts gripping the bat in his customary split-handed grip in full Philadelphia Athletic regalia. The card displays much finer than the assessed grade of PSA GOOD 2, with each of the four corners retaining a squareness not usually encountered on cards of this low grade and more often seen on cards of EX or so condition. The centering is astute and the focus of subject is exceptionally strong. The major stumbling block to a higher grade is in the interior of the card towards Cobb's left leg where there is an area of creasing and a small imperfection that does pert rude to the reverse of the card which has had a major impact and caused the overall assessment of the condition of this card to plummet. As well the reverse of the card displays several areas of staining and discoloration. A terrifically rare card from an exceptionally rare release that comes with our strongest of recommendations.
