On Monday, August 16, 1948, the baseball world lost its greatest hero, George Herman "Babe" Ruth, after a lengthy battle with throat cancer. On Tuesday, August 17, the Detroit Free Press, among thousands of other newspapers and publications, dedicated its front page to the tragic story. Offered here is an original copy of the Detroit Free Press newspaper, with the headline "BABE RUTH DIES" and the subtitle "Cancer of the Throat Stills a Fighting Heart at 53." There are stories and pictures about the Bambino throughout the newspaper, which is in overall EX condition with all pages and the binding intact. Also included is a 1947 copy of sheet music for the song "Babe" which features a large, crisp image of the immortal slugger on the front cover, in EX condition.
