Though he's one of the most colorful characters in baseball's storied history, only three different mainstream cards of Hall of Famer Satchel Paige were produced during his major league playing days, one each by Leaf, Bowman and Topps. This is his 1949 Bowman card, a top-notch example that easily earns the rarely achieved grade of SGC 88 NM/MT 8. The card has four solidly square NM/MT corners, excellent centering that is slightly positioned toward the south edge, a rich pastel green-blue background and deep, bold color in Paige's cap and uniform. The registry is virtually perfect while the border is a brilliant white and the reverse is brilliantly struck with the same deep color of print exhibited on the obverse. An absolutely stunning card that is completely worthy of the grade.
