The 1961 Fleer basketball series boasts some of the most important pasteboards from the hardcourt, including the rookie cards of Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson and Jerry West. But the most amazing thing about the set might be its overall star power, with 35 of the 66 cards in the set listed individually in the SMR, meaning that there are not many cards in the series that can be labeled a "common." So if you managed to actually get your hands on an unopened pack and decided to roll the dice, you'd be almost assured of scoring some top-notch pieces. A little over 5 years ago, we were fortunate enough to come across several unopened wax boxes from this legendary collection. Needless to say, they didn't last long, quickly gobbled up by advanced unopened material collectors. Since that time, the value of vintage Hall of Famer rookie cards has risen exponentially, taking the prices of unopened material to record prices. Well behold, the 1961 Fleer unopened box has returned! This box is fresh to the hobby, having been stored away by the family of the consignor since it's introduction over 50 years ago. Twenty-four unopened NM to NM/MT packs await the winning bidder, potentially containing GEM MINT examples of cards that have yet to reach the top of PSA's grading scale. Almost 30,000 cards from this series have passed through the doors of PSA's California headquarters and just 81 specimens have left with a GEM MINT grade. Then again, not many of those have gone straight from pack to grader, and while that possibility exists for the winning bidder, you'd really have to be a riverboat gambler to take that plunge. BBCE has examined the box and given it their seal of approval, wrapping and labeling it to assure the authenticity of what is being offered. If you acquired one of the boxes we had five years ago, you've been financially rewarded very handsomely, and that could happen again for the next fortunate high bidder!
