Since 1959 Topps had sponsored a formal post-season banquet to honor it's all star rookie team. In 1964, the gum company deviated from the traditional dinner program by issuing a 35-card boxed set. Rico Carty made an impressive major league debut in 1964, finishing second to Roberto Clemente in the National League Batting Championship with a .330 batting average and finishing the season as runner-up to Dick Allen in the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year Award ballot. It was these accomplishments that led the Dominican Republic-born Carty to be honored at this banquet, and named card #23 in this truly rare baseball card set. Granted a Mint 9 by PSA, this is one of only two to be given such high marks, and with none graded any higher.
