Besides Jim Brown and Barry Sanders, the only NFL running back ever mentioned as potentially the greatest of all-time is "The Kansas Comet," Gale Sayers. While his career was short lived, Sayers averaged an astounding 5.0 yards per carry and led the NFL with an incredible 6.2 yard average in 1968. Though he played only 5 full NFL seasons and amassed just short of 5,000 yards, Sayers was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1977. The offered jersey appears to have been the property of Sayers, though the terms of its use are unconfirmed. This heavyweight, cold weather jersey is thought to be from the 1970 or 1971 season, when the Bears started putting nameplates on the back. Since Sayers only played in two games in both the 1970 and '71 seasons, there are few opportunities to photo match the jersey to Sayers, but three of those four games were played in cold conditions. The font does not appear to match photos that we've seen, but staining on the front as well as multiple team repairs around the neck and shoulders suggest that it was used on the gridiron in some form or fashion, potentially in a regulation game, preseason game or as a practice jersey.
