While the North American Soccer League (NASL) battled attendance woes until its eventual folding in 1984, one team was routinely drawing 35,000 to 40,000 per game. In fact, the New York Cosmos once sold out Giants Stadium, packing in over 73,000 for their 1978 Championship win behind the stardom of aging superstars Pele and Franz Beckenbauer. While both well past their prime, Pele was widely considered the best scorer that ever lived and Beckenbauer, twice selected European Footballer of the Year and the only player ever to win the World Cup as team Captain and Coach, was thought to be the best defender the game had ever seen. In 1999, Beckenbauer was selected as the third best player of the century, behind Pele and Cruyff. The presented game-used jersey provides a rare glimpse into the glory days of New York Cosmos soccer, worn by Beckenbauer during the 1983 season. Inside the collar is the Ellesse manufacturer label, with the familiar player number and Cosmos logo on the front. Excessive wear is evident, with advanced aging of the name and number on the back exhibited. A fantastic relic from one of the greatest players in history that helped make the sport of soccer a mainstay in American society. LOA from Mile High Card Company.
