At age 20 and in just his second major league season, "Dr.K" Dwight Gooden completed one of the most remarkable campaigns in baseball history. With a league leading 24-4 record, 1.53 ERA, and 268 strikeouts, Dwight Gooden achieved the pitcher's Triple Crown. Possessing the game's most explosive fastball and a curveball so elusive that it was nicknamed "Lord Charles" in comparison to a typical pitcher's "Uncle Charlie," Gooden led the Mets into a thrilling pennant race with the St. Louis Cardinals. But a 98-64 record was only good enough for 2nd place, and the Cardinals went on to capture the National League pennant in 1985. But in 1986, with baseball renegades Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, Lenny Dykstra, and Darryl Strawberry leading the way, the Mets bolted out to a 54-21 record by July 4th and never looked back, finishing 21.5 games ahead of their next closest rival. The Mets' top four starters (Gooden, Ron Darling, Bob Ojeda, and Sid Fernandez) each won 16 games or more that year, and combined for a 66-23 record and a 2.92 ERA. While the 1986 New York Mets were one of the most dominant teams in baseball history, they were within one out of losing the Championship. But a 9th inning rally, capped by Mookie Wilson's ground ball that fluttered through the legs of gimpy first baseman Bill Buckner, brought the Mets an unlikely game 6 victory in what is considered one of baseball's most memorable moments. Presented is the game-used New York Mets jersey worn by pitching ace Dwight Gooden during that storybook 1986 World Championship season. On the front left tail is the “W.A. Goodman & Sons” size 44 label, with a New York Mets 25th Anniversary patch on the left sleeve, verifying that the jersey is from the 1986 World Championship season. The Mets logo, numbers, and “GOODEN” nameplate are tackle twill stitched. LOA from Mile High Card Co.
