Elected to the Hall of Fame in 2006, Alejandro "Alex" Pompez was a pioneer in the Negro League and helped incorporate black and Hispanic players into the major leagues. Born in Florida to Cuban immigrants, Pompez owned the Cuban Stars and New York Cubans franchises of the Negro League from 1916 to 1950 and helped organize the first Negro League World Series in 1924. He later served as a scout for the Giants, signing players that include Camilo Pascual, Tony Oliva and Orlando Cepeda. This original 5-7/8" by 3-3/4" circa 1930s deckled-edge photo shows Pompez around the time he became owner of the New York Cubans Negro League team. The thin paper stock exposes many surface creases with back damage from once having been pasted into an album but the image quality and eye appeal are excellent. "Alejandro Pompez" is written on the back in an unknown hand. An exceptionally rare and historic piece of baseball history!
