Even before his heroics in 1956, Mickey Mantle was already the newest legend in a string of baseball icons dating back to Babe Ruth. So how do you top a Triple Crown season? You go head to head with "The Babe" and challenge his long-standing single season home run total. As if written in Hollywood, Mantle not only had to chase down "The Sultan of Swat" but also had to slug it out with another player, a teammate no less in Roger Maris. The featured 8 x 10 black and white photo is a classic, snapped by renown sports artist Louis Requena and capturing a lighter moment of Maris and Mantle, deemed "The M&M Boys' by the press. With the majesty of the Yankee Stadium seats in the backdrop, Mantle and Maris pose, bat on shoulder. Many Mantle/Maris photos from this time period were snapped, but this one has the Louis Requena stamp on the back, a confirmation from the lord of New York sports photographers.
