Mickey Mantle’s Game-Used and Autographed 1956 Triple Crown Home Jersey Worn in 1956 All-Star Game With Extensive Photo Match Coming To Mile High Card Company January Auction
CASTLE ROCK, CO - Arguably the most significant game-worn item of the post-war era, Mile High Card Company is proud to offer, in their January auction, Mickey Mantle’s game-used Yankees flannel home jersey from the first half of his 1956 Triple Crown season. “This is likely the finest Mickey Mantle game-used jersey ever to come to market, and it originates from one of the greatest seasons of any player in baseball history“ said MHCC President and CEO Brian Drent. The event begins on Monday, January 6th and concludes on Thursday, January 23rd.
With a league-leading 52 homers, 130 RBI, and .353 batting average, Mantle captured his first American League MVP award in unanimous fashion and proceeded to smash three postseason round trippers in a seven-game World Series victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers. The jersey has rock-solid confirmation with MEARS authentication from extensive photo matching, as well as Sports Investors Authentication with photo matching to the 1956 All-Star game and some games from the 1955 season. In all, the photo matches suggest that Mantle wore this jersey for at least 17 home runs in the 1956 season, including that All-Star game. Photo matching usually requires a unique characteristic such as a team repair or a specific area of wear, but not so with Yankees home jerseys as the placement and angle of the 14-point “NY” logo against the pinstripes on the front is a decisive indicator. And while the offered jersey has "Mantle 55 - 7" appearing in stitched cursive blue lettering on the front left tail, it has been confirmed as a 1956 gamer with early season use from dozens of snapshots, Sports Illustrated and Life magazine covers, and advertising displays from 1956. A famed snapshot taken in 1956 of Mantle granting an interview to Nicholas Baehr shows this jersey hanging in Mantle's locker, the blue stitching on the tail clearly visible and properly aligned exactly against the pinstripes, that leads right up to and including its use in the 1956 All-Star game. The jersey it autographed by Mantle as well, authenticated by JSA.
This jersey is one of a triumvirate of museum-quality Mickey Mantle items in the January auction, which includes his game-used 1960 World Series bat (MEARS A10) and the iconic 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle card, graded PSA 8. Other headlining items include game-used bats from Babe Ruth (1929-30 PSA/DNA GU 9), and Ty Cobb (1922, the only known example from a .400+ season PSA/DNA GU 10) as well as game-used jerseys of Al Kaline (1964), Harmon Killebrew (1968-69) and Ted Williams (1971-72).
