Mile High Card Company May Auction Obliterates Previous Record Prices; 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle PSA 6.5 sells for over $188,000.

Centennial, CO – Mile High Card Company’s May Auction closed to spectacular results in the wee hours of the morning, bringing in total sales just short of two million dollars while erasing many records by doubling and even tripling previous landmark prices. “We expected the ’52 Mantle to completely destroy the record, but even with a high level of optimism leading up to the auction, we were blown away by the results. Our exclusive list of world-class collectors is the best in the business and they proved it again today,” said MHCC President and CEO Brian Drent.

Right from the opening bell, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card graded PSA 6.5 but possessing the sharpness and centering of a NM/MT card was on its way to record territory, crossing the $100,000 threshold within the first two hours of bidding. When all was said and done, the card changed hands to the tune of $188,207, beating a higher-graded PSA 7 example that sold two months ago by over $27,000. As the auction went on, it became clear that the ’52 Mantle was not an exception, with card after card falling to unprecedented prices that no one could have predicted: a 1914 Cracker Jack #30 Ty Cobb PSA 8 NM/MT sold for $105,606, 1902-11 Sporting Life W600 Honus Wagner VG/EX was bid to $57,261, 1902-11 W600 Sporting Life Napoleon Lajoie PSA 6 EX/MT went for $40,992, 1902-11 Sporting Life W600 Christy Mathewson GOOD+ 2.5 brought in $17,288, 1965 Topps #350 Mickey Mantle PSA 9 MINT closed at $24,331, 1952 Topps #261 Willie Mays PSA 8 NM/MT ended at $37,869, 1971 Topps #630 Roberto Clemente PSA 9 MINT that nearly doubled the previous record price at $15,127 and a 1984-85 Star #101 Michael Jordan BGS 9 MINT closed at an incredible $46,569. The Spectacular Newly Discovered 1915 E145 Cracker Jack Advertising Display Poster, one of less than five known to exist, saw steady action throughout the night and closed at $61,741.

Other high-profile cards that brought about phenomenal results include a pair of 1955 Topps #164 Roberto Clemente rookie cards that each earned a sale price of $68,018, 1909 E92 Nadja Caramel Honus Wagner "Batting" PSA 3 VG that brought in $6,321, 1909-11 T206 Piedmont Ty Cobb Portrait Green Background PSA 3 VG that ended at $4,523, 1933 Goudey #181 Babe Ruth NM+ 7.5 that sold for $13,337, 1954 Topps #128 Henry Aaron PSA 8 NM/MT that sold for $38,129, 1952 Topps #136 Johnny Schmitz PSA 9 MINT that found a new home for $4,316, 1952 Topps #321 Joe Black PSA 9 MINT that went for $10,817, 1953 Topps #82 Mickey Mantle PSA 7 NM that closed at $15,311, 1964 Topps #125 Pete Rose PSA 9 MINT that sold just short of $10,000, 1956 Topps #33 Roberto Clemente PSA 8 NM/MT that sold for a whopping $3,299, 1956 Topps #83 Karl Spooner PSA 10 GEM MINT set a new record at $4,393, 1960 Topps #326 Bob Clemente PSA 9 MINT went for $9,018, 1964 Bazooka Panel Roberto Clemente PSA 10 GEM MINT sold for $4,316, 1966 Topps #100 Sandy Koufax PSA 9 MINT blew away previous marks with a sale at $3,993, 1966 Topps #215 NL Batting Leaders (Clemente/Aaron/Mays) PSA 10 GEM MINT destroyed the record book with a price of $8,565, 1971 Topps #1 Oscar Robertson PSA 9 MINT that also set a new mark at $1,986, 1973 O-Pee-Chee #615 Mike Schmidt PSA 10 GEM MINT that changed hands for $9,226 and a 1956 Topps #135 Mickey Mantle PSA 8 NM/MT that sold for $10,150.

But it wasn’t just high-grade single cards bringing in astronomical results, with a 1909-11 T206 Complete Set Minus The Big Four with PSA Graded garnering $33,792, 1933 Goudey Near-Complete Set (237/240) With Two Ruths and Both Gehrigs All PSA 4 VG/EX earning $27,537, Exceptionally High Grade 1965 Topps Near Complete Set of (424/598) Cards Completely PSA Graded all PSA 8 or 9 closing out at $23,403 and a 1968 Topps Football Near Complete Master Set (214/220) All PSA 9 MINT #2 on PSA Set Registry bringing in $20,725.

Unopened material and memorabilia continued the trend, with bidders battling over a 1974 Topps Football Full Unopened Vending Box Group of (13) before it landed at a sale price of $34,243, a quartet of 1985 Topps Football Full Unopened Rack Pack Cases that brought in just short of $4,000 each and three individual 1976-77 Topps Hockey Full Unopened Wax Cases that sold for a total of $26,158. A 1980s Bo Jackson Auburn Tigers Game-Used Jersey brought the curtain down at $10,692, 1960s Hank Aaron Atlanta Braves Game-Used Batting Helmet from Delbert Mickel Collection sold for $10,163, 1985 Eric Dickerson Los Angeles Rams Game-Used and Signed Helmet With Team LOA finished at $5,474 and a Spectacular 1934 New York Yankees Team-Signed Baseball with (24) Signatures Featuring Ruth and Gehrig sold for $10,406. A pair of Thurman Munson signed Topps cards attained unprecedented results, with a signed 1971 Topps #5 Munson selling for $5,260 and a 1977 Topps #170 Munson reaching $3,951.
