Record-Shattering Prices Dominate Mile High Card Company March Auction
Castle Rock, CO –Offering many cards not seen by the general public in decades that reached record prices, Mile High Card Company wrapped up the largest auction in the company’s history on Thursday, March 22nd, reaffirming its position as the preeminent purveyor of sports cards and memorabilia. With over 2,300 lots for the offering, heavy bidding continued long into the night with the featured card of the auction, a 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal 350/30 Eddie Plank PSA 2.5 GOOD+, bringing home a staggering $82,008. “Because there were so many cards that hadn’t appeared at auction in recent memory, we anticipated it was going to be a late night. Overall, the auction met our high expectations” said MHCC CEO and President Brian Drent.
The highly publicized Brian Goldner collection, over 900 lots from some of the most elusive late 19th to mid 20th century’s issues, produced some truly incredible results. In addition to the T206 Plank, a 1909-11 T206 Old Mill Sid Smith SGC 96 MINT 9 sold for $9,012, 1910 E105 Mello-Mint Gum Hans Lobert SGC 50 VG/EX 4 hammered at $4,749, 1910 E105 Mello-Mint Gum Mickey Doolan SGC 30 GOOD 2 brought in $5,403, 1914 Piedmont Art Stamps T330-2 Ty Cobb SGC 60 EX 5 sold for $4,621, and 1933 World Wide Gum #93 Babe Ruth SGC 40 VG 3 fetched $5,519.
Also setting new price records were two of the most impressive sets topping the ranks of the PSA Set Registry; a 1965 Topps Baseball Complete Set #1 on PSA Set Registry that went for $208,875 and a 1991 Topps Desert Shield Complete Set #1 On PSA Set Registry, voted the 2017 Best Modern Baseball Set of the Year, that set a record price at $106,475. Other highly-ranked assemblages included a 1938 Goudey Heads Up Complete Set #6 On PSA Set Registry that sold for $15,250, 1952 Berk Ross Baseball Complete Set with PSA Graded that sold for $5,472, 1948 Leaf Football Complete Set All PSA Graded that closed at $9,012 and a 1951 Topps Ringside Complete Set #3 on PSA Set Registry that sold as individual lots, exceeding expectations at a total of $43,152.
The Sigurd Berg collection, over 100 lots of autographed envelopes and note cards, was highlighted by a Babe Ruth Signed Envelope PSA/DNA 9 that sold for $5,594 and a Grover C. Alexander Signed Envelope PSA/DNA 10 for $2,345. In addition to the Berg collection, up for auction was a group of incredible signed checks with a Honus Wagner Signed and Cancelled Bank Check PSA/DNA 9 MINT selling at a price of $2,094, Ty Cobb Signed and Cancelled Bank Check PSA/DNA 10 GEM MINT that went for $1,407 and Jackie Robinson Signed and Cancelled Bank Check PSA/DNA 10 GEM MINT that hammered at $3,024. Also, a recently discovered George Herman Ruth (Babe Ruth) 1928 Fully Executed and Signed Real Estate Contract that is authenticated by PSA/DNA and JSA found a new owner for $5,707.
Other key items in the auction included a 1911 M131 Baltimore News Newsboys Ty Cobb SGC 20 FAIR 1.5 that sold for $19,014, 1911 T205 Gold Borders Cy Young PSA 4 VG/EX that sold for $2,499, 1928 Star Player Candy Ty Cobb PSA 2 GOOD that went for $18,018, 1941 Play Ball #14 Ted Williams SGC 88 NM/MT 8 that brought in an impressive $6,019, 1941 Double Play DiMaggio/Keller PSA 8.5 NM/MT+ that brought in $7,998, top-notch Exhibits cards with 1947-66 Exhibits 1951 Yankees Team PSA 8 NM/MT with Rookie Mickey Mantle earning $3,735, 1947-66 Exhibits 1951 Giants Team PSA 8 NM/MT with Rookie Willie Mays fetching $4,110 and 1947-66 Exhibits 1955 Dodgers Team PSA 9 MINT selling for $5,520, a sharp 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle SGC 55 VG/EX+ 4.5 that sold for $6,987, 1952 Topps #1 Andy Pafko PSA 7.5 NM+ selling for $14,719, 1953 Topps #273 Harvey Haddix PSA 8 NM/MT hammering for $2,212, 1956 Topps #135 Mickey Mantle Gray Back PSA 8 NM/MT at $9,302, 1959 Topps #64 Dave Hanner PSA 10 GEM MINT that surprised with a price of $9,306, 1961-63 Bobbin' Head Dolls Mickey Mantle Ad Photo PSA 9 MINT that brought in $9,302, 1962 Bell Brand #32 Sandy Koufax PSA 9 MINT that amazed with a price of $21,911, 1962 Topps #162 Dave Baker PSA 9 MINT that sold for $5,251, GEM MINT 1963 Fleer cards that included 1963 Fleer #5 Willie Mays PSA 10 GEM MINT that changed hands for $17,872, 1963 Fleer #8 Carl Yastrzemski PSA 10 GEM MINT that sold for $6,770 and 1963 Fleer #61 Bob Gibson PSA 10 GEM MINT that went for $4,680, 1964 Kahn's Wieners Pete Rose PSA 10 GEM MINT that sold for $10,247, 1968 Topps #110 Hank Aaron PSA 10 GEM MINT selling for $8,012 and 1968 Topps #50 Willie Mays PSA 10 GEM MINT going for $8,283.
Hockey cards had a strong showing as well with a 1953 Parkhurst #24 Maurice Richard PSA 8 NM/MT bringing in $3,079, 1954 Topps #50 Warren Godfrey PSA 9 MINT selling for $2,271 and a trio of elite-grade 1957 Topps cards; 1957 Topps #6 Larry Regan PSA 9 MINT at $2,185, 1957 Topps #22 Pierre Pilote PSA 8.5 NM/MT+ at $3,837 and a 1957 Topps #34 Alex Delvecchio PSA 9 MINT at $2,829.
Three extremely rare unopened packs also produced some impressive winning bids; an unopened 1952 Topps Baseball Wax Pack 5 Cent GAI 6.5 EX/MT+ for $10,114, 1953 Topps Baseball Wax Pack 5 Cent GAI 5.5 EX+ for $20,180 and 1957 Topps Basketball Wax Pack 5 Cent GAI 7.5 NM+ for $19,873. Even non-sports cards were setting record prices with a 1962 Mars Attacks #41 Horror in Paris PSA 9 MINT, #43 Blasting the Bug PSA 9 MINT and #46 Blast Off for Mars PSA 9 MINT selling for $5,794, $5,676 and $5,160 respectively.
